Cox's Bay | Heritage Bungalow Renovation
A large-scale heritage bungalow renovation in Cox's Bay, Auckland — dressed up and a little bit fancy in front, relaxed, contemporary, and built for entertaining behind. This 1920s character bungalow had good bones and a handsome original facade, but its street presence had faded and the interior had become rambling, disconnected from the outdoors, and undersized for the way the family wanted to live.
We introduced formal garden elements and a new garage that tie in with the home’s original 1920s architecture, giving this Cox’s Bay bungalow the street presence it always deserved. The approach was precise: sympathetic enough to honour the heritage character, contemporary enough to serve a modern family well.
Inside, we reorganised the existing layout to enhance the home’s formal qualities and make the kitchen the true heart of the house. The result rivals the character of the original bungalow in a modern, character-filled way — every room reworked for coherence, warmth, and genuine liveability.
The new kitchen connects directly to an outdoor kitchen extension — an entertainer’s delight — flowing out to a covered deck, outdoor fire, swimming pool, and cabana. A complementary fitout and carefully considered colour palette balance the richness of the existing heritage home, letting the old and new sit comfortably together.
This Cox’s Bay heritage renovation was awarded a Bronze Pin at the 2018 BEST Awards and featured in Urbis magazine, Issue 102.
