This thoughtfully renovated character villa by Rogan Nash Architects in Auckland’s Herne Bay makes the most of its long thin site. The villa houses the four bedrooms and bathroom (as well as a large wardrobe and en suite to the main suite). Walking from the street to the front door you follow the central hallway and are led down a few steps taking you from the villa to the new addition, with a contrasting modernist aesthetic. On your left is an outdoor lounge – a terrace with outdoor fireplace which faces the west and makes the most of the late afternoon sun. To your right is a media room and straight ahead the ceiling height increases in the open – plan living, dining and kitchen then outside to the outdoor dining, with outdoor fireplace and BBQ area, and carefully considered north-facing garden. Running the length of the new addition is a lap pool, which seems to fuse outdoors and indoors. Past the kitchen is a scullery, which adds extensive storage, and additional access to the northern garden.
This project was awarded a NZIA Housing award and Silver Pin at the 2018 BEST Awards and a Highly Commended in the 2018 Interior of the Year (Kitchen) and was a finalist in the 2018 Interior of the Year (Indoor/Outdoor Space).
